PCB Bans Pakistan from World Champions of Legends Over Biased Treatment Post India Boycott
Just a day after the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) banned teams from using the country’s name in cricket events, they've now decided to stop any future participation in the World Championship of Legends (WCL). This move follows the India Champions pulling out of two matches against Pakistan in the WCL 2025. Led by Yuvraj Singh, the Indian team first forfeited their opening match and then backed out of the semi-final. The PCB’s "blanket ban" on future participation is a response to what they call biased behavior by the tournament organizers, especially since India forfeited the games because of the ongoing political tensions between the two countries.
The Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) decided to ban Pakistan from future World Championship of Legends (WCL) events after a meeting earlier this week. They were unhappy with how the WCL organizers handled India’s decision to boycott matches against Pakistan saying their statements were "hypocritical and biased." It’s also important to note that several Indian players, including Suresh Raina, Shikhar Dhawan, Harbhajan Singh, and Yusuf and Irfan Pathan pulled out of the WCL 2025 opener against Pakistan. This was because of the ongoing tensions between the two countries after the Pahalgam terror attack.
"The cancellation was not based on cricketing merit but on appeasing a specific nationalistic narrative. This sends an unacceptable message to the international sporting community. However, we cannot allow our players to be part of events where the spirit of the game is overshadowed by skewed politics that undermines the very essence of sportsmanship and the gentleman's game." the PCB said in a statement.
The WCL apologized for "hurting sentiments" after India withdrew from the tournament.
The PCB responded, saying the apology was "farcical" and actually admitted that the cancellation wasn’t about cricket, but rather about giving in to a nationalistic agenda."This bias, masquerading as sensitivity, sends an unacceptable message to the international sporting community." the Statement added.
PCB Responds to India’s Withdrawal, Cites Damage to National Image
According to news agency ANI, the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) has declared that only they have the exclusive right to use Pakistan’s name in cricket events. The board warned that legal action will be taken against anyone who attempts to use the country’s name without permission. The report also mentioned that PCB officials were upset over India’s decision to boycott Pakistan twice in the WCL 2025 feeling it hurt the country’s image.
“All private organizations will face legal action in case they use Pakistan’s name. PCB has the sole right to allow its use for cricket events if it finds the authenticity of the League and the organization as reputable,” the ANI report stated.
