Pakistan to boycott India fixture, will play remaining T20 World Cup as per schedule
The Government of Pakistan has allowed the national team to take part in the upcoming T20 World Cup, which begins on February 7. However, Pakistan, set to play all their games in Sri Lanka, will boycott the match against India on February 15 in Colombo.
Pakistan to play T20 World Cup except India clash
The decision, which comes a day before the deadline given earlier by the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) chairman Mohsin Naqvi, was made through a post from the Government of Pakistan’s X handle.
“The Government of the Islamic Republic of Pakistan grants approval to the Pakistan Cricket Team to participate in the ICC World T20 2026; however, the Pakistan Cricket Team shall not take the field in the match scheduled on 15th February 2026 against India,” the post read.
The boycott comes in response to the International Cricket Council (ICC) not agreeing to the Bangladesh Cricket Board’s (BCB) request to shift their World Cup games out of India, citing security risks. This was followed by the global body issuing an ultimatum to Bangladesh to confirm their participation in the World Cup under the original schedule. However, the BCB kept firm on its earlier decision and eventually got replaced by Scotland in the tournament.
Why have Pakistan boycotted India’s game?
During this tussle, Pakistan sided with Bangladesh, accusing the ICC of double standards, citing the shift of India’s Champions Trophy games last year out of Pakistan when they made a request. There were reports that Pakistan might boycott the entire tournament, though the board was mulling over other options as well, one of which was boycotting only the India game. However, the PCB chairman kept saying that the board would act as per the government’s decision.
