New Zealand to Launch Its Own IPL T20 League in 2027
The Super Smash is currently the only T20 league in New Zealand, but it often gets ignored because it does not bring in big international players and mostly features local Kiwi talent. Don MacKinnon, the head of the NZ20 committee, believes New Zealand needs more than just the Super Smash when it comes to T20 cricket.
New Zealand cricket is now preparing for a major change as they plan to start a privately owned T20 league. The model may be similar to the CPL, where New Zealand Cricket will give the licence, but the league will be run by a separate management group.
In a recent talk with ESPNcricinfo, MacKinnon said the NZ20 project is very practical and has support from several known names in New Zealand cricket. He also believes this is the right time to begin the new league. The NZ20 plans still need approval from New Zealand Cricket. If they get the green signal, the Super Smash may be removed. The Super Smash has six teams, but NZ20 Committee head Don MacKinnon says the tournament is not working anymore.
In 2014, NZC had rejected the idea of a private T20 league because they thought it could not compete with big leagues like the IPL or the BBL. But now, MacKinnon says the time is right for New Zealand to start its own strong T20 brand. He says the Super Smash no longer brings crowds to the stadium and has become more of a “development” event for players.
MacKinnon explained that the new league will be different because of private investment. With private money, they can try new ideas, improve the fan experience in the stadium, and make TV and online viewing better. He also believes that if the league is successful, top New Zealand players will return to play domestic cricket again.
The idea for a private T20 league in New Zealand came from big names like Stephen Fleming, who feel that the country now needs its own franchise league. But for this plan to move forward, New Zealand Cricket (NZC) must approve it. A quick decision is needed because the league is planned to start in January 2027.
MacKinnon said they have been talking with NZC for the past two to three months. He added that NZC has been supportive, but they are also checking other possibilities — including the option of trying to get a New Zealand team into the Big Bash League in Australia.
According to MacKinnon, the biggest challenge will be finding a clear schedule so that the new league does not clash with tournaments like the BBL, IPL, SA20, or ILT20, as many players from New Zealand play in these leagues.
MacKinnon Said
“We know we won’t be able to get every player we want, but the feedback from New Zealand players has been very positive. They are really excited about this tournament and will do their best to take part,”
One question still remains: whether IPL franchise owners who now also own teams in The Hundred, SA20, MLC, CPL, and possibly the BBL are interested in investing in a T20 league in New Zealand.
