In an exemplary show of batting and bowling, New Zealand defeated England in the third match in the second session of the fourth day. After scoring 347 in the first innings and 453 in the second innings, New Zealand set the target of 658 runs. While England got all out in just 143 runs in the first innings, New Zealand finished England's second innings at just 234 runs, winning the match by 423 runs.
On the fourth day, Jacob Bethel and Joe Root came to bat at a score of 18 runs for two wickets. Both batted beautifully for the next 20 overs until Joe Root got out at 54 runs while playing 64 balls. Root and Jacob formed a partnership of 104 runs with 23 boundaries during their time together.
England's New Shining Star
Jacob Bethell once again scored a fifty, the third in this series. Except for Bethell and Root, every other batter seemed off with their batting; during his 76 runs off 96 balls, he hit 13 boundaries and one six. This is worth mentioning that it is his just third test match, and he has scored in all those matches, showing his potential and capabilities. With his continuous performances in all the formats, he has also received an upgraded contract from the ECB and also bagged an IPL contract with Royal Challengers Bengaluru.
England's Batting Collapsed Once Again.
Just after the dismissal of Joe Root, England saw two collapses during their innings, from 122/2 to 165/5, losing three important wickets of Root, Harry Brook and Jacob Bethell. During the second collapse, England was 215/5 at the start of the 43rd over, but England lost four wickets in just 19 runs during the last five overs. While Ben Stokes was absent because of his injury and didn't come to bat. A more serious concern for England is that in both the innings, the team couldn't play even 50 overs.
Ben Stokes Injury
Ben Stokes, who returned to the dressing room on day 3 after pulling his hamstring during bowling, didn’t return to bat on day 4. The team confirmed in the morning that he could come to bat if needed, but by the end of the innings, it was obvious that his batting would not benefit England this time and would be better if he rested in the dressing room.
Bowling Performance by New Zealand
New Zealand again trapped England in the second inning after doing the same in the first inning. Pacer Will O’Rourke and Mitchell Santhner's bowling couldn't let England score easy runs. Matt Henry and Tim Southee, playing his last test match, took 2-2 wickets each, while Rourke took one wicket and Mitchell Santhner took four.
Mitchell Santhner: The change Team Didn't Know They Wanted
New Zealand brought Mitchell Santhner into the playing 11 to bring spin bowling against England, but his all-round skills during the match were exemplary. In addition to scoring 76 and 44 in both innings, and took seven wickets in the test match, 3 in the first innings and 4 in the second innings. For his performance, he also received the Man of the Match award.
The shameful defeat in the third test match dampened England's celebration of winning the series, but now England has over 5 months to prepare since their next test series against Zimbabwe is 5 months away.
