Mumbai Indians Announce Replacements for Will Jacks, Ryan Rickelton and Corbin Bosch
On May 20, Mumbai Indians (MI) announced three replacement players for their overseas stars who will leave for national duty. Will Jacks from England, South Africa’s Ryan Rickelton and Corbin Bosch won’t be available for the playoffs. To fill their spots, MI signed England’s wicketkeeper-batter Jonny Bairstow, Sri Lanka’s white-ball captain Charith Asalanka and England fast bowler Richard Gleeson.
Bairstow was signed for ₹5.25 crore, Gleeson for ₹1 crore, while Asalanka joined at his base price. However, these replacements will only come into effect if Mumbai Indians make it to the playoffs.
Will Jacks Departure Could Impact Mumbai Indians’ Middle Order
Will Jacks, Ryan Rickelton, and Corbin Bosch will be available for Mumbai Indians' important match against Delhi Capitals on May 21 at Wankhede Stadium. MI, led by Hardik Pandya, currently sit fourth on the points table with seven wins out of 12 games and a healthy net run rate of +1.156.
If MI lose this key home match, their chances will depend on Punjab Kings beating Delhi Capitals on May 24. Following that, Mumbai Indians will need to win their last league game against Punjab Kings on May 26 to secure a spot in the playoffs.
Rickelton leaving the team will be a big loss for Mumbai Indians. The South African wicketkeeper-batsman is their second-highest run-scorer, with 336 runs in 12 matches at an average of 30.55, including three fifties. He also maintains a strong strike rate of 153.42. His teammate Bosch has played only two matches, scoring 47 runs and taking one wicket. Both players are set to join South Africa’s squad for the World Test Championship (WTC) 2025 final against Australia.
Will Jacks is part of England’s ODI squad for the upcoming home series against the West Indies. As a bowler, he has taken six wickets at an average of 18.60 and an economy rate of 7.75. With the bat, he has scored 195 runs in 11 innings, averaging 24.38.
Charith Asalanka Set for His IPL Debut After Strong T20I Performances
Jonny Bairstow was part of the Punjab Kings squad last season and made a big impact by scoring an unbeaten 108 in the highest successful run chase in IPL history. Despite this, he went unsold in the recent mega auction. Over his IPL career, Bairstow has scored 1,589 runs in 50 innings at an average of 34.54, including two centuries and nine fifties.
Richard Gleeson made his IPL debut with Chennai Super Kings last season but managed just one wicket in two matches. Meanwhile, Charith Asalanka is about to play his first IPL season. In T20 internationals, Asalanka has scored 1,247 runs in 57 matches at an average of 24.45, with six fifties, and has taken six wickets as well. In India, he has played six T20Is and scored 127 runs, including one fifty.
