Mitchell Santner Steps Up as New Zealand's New White-Ball Captain

New Zealand Cricket Board Blackcaps announced Mitchell Santner as their new ODI captain. He's taking over because Kane Williamson decided to step down as a captain after this year's T20 World Cup 2024. Santner already had some experience in leading the team. Santner has captained 24 T20 internationals and four one-day internationals. His first major test as the leader will be against Sri Lanka in a series starting at the end of December.

Santner said: "Being handed this responsibility is a massive honor and privilege. I always dreamed of playing for New Zealand as a young person but to captain the team in two formats is something truly special for me. It's an entirely new challenge, and I'm eagerly looking forward to tackling the significant white-ball cricket that's coming up". Santner is set to face a major test early on with the Champions Trophy in February, then it's on to preparing for the T20 World Cup in 2026.

Santner’s Leadership Journey

The head coach of the New Zealand cricket team Gary Stead said: "we made this decision to make Tom Latham's job as test captain easier and also recognized Santner for playing very good in both kinds of white-ball games."

Stead mentioned: "Since becoming test captain in October, Tom has been amazing; but we want him to concentrate on just that job, because it takes a large amount of time and energy."

He said "Mitch is amazing, really calm no matter what is happening, and everyone in the team really looks up to him. Mitch knows what's happening because he's led the T20 group and even stepped in for the ODI team. He's got a chance for leading and we believe he'll include some wonderful new ideas and ways of doing things." He also mentioned that Mitch is a great person to have on the team who just naturally knows how to take charge.

In 2025, New Zealand's Test schedule is light, which is really great for Santner because he gets a great opportunity to learn a lot about being the captain for white-ball games. He just did really well again in his Test career, demonstrating amazing abilities against India in Pune and England in Hamilton. Now, he can use that momentum and lead the team during a period where there are a major amount of matches.

What do you think about New Zealand's new captain Mitchell Santner as a leader?
