Middle East War Disrupts Cricket: League 2 Tri-Series in Nepal Postponed

The ongoing war in the Middle East continues to impact cricket. The players that represent Zimbabwe and the West Indies cannot return home after they both finished competing in the 2026 Men's T20 World Cup. Additionally, England player Jonny Bairstow and his family are also trapped in Dubai.

Because of the situation, the ICC is also being impacted by the war and the 2027 World Cup is being affected as well. A planned tripartite series involving the United Arab Emirates, Nepal, and Oman to be held in Kathmandu, which was originally scheduled for November 2025 and rescheduled due to the Nepal Premier League 2025 has now been postponed.

Middle East Conflict Forces Postponement of League 2 Tri-Serie

This trilateral series is an integral part of the ICC World Cup League 2 from 2023-27 and assists in determining qualification for the Cricket World Cup Qualifier, for those that will play in the Cricket World Cup scheduled for 2027. The Emirates Cricket Board, Nepal Cricket Association, and Oman Cricket Board are all monitoring the situation closely. The entire region will be without flights initially due to flight restrictions across the area.

Although limited flight operations have restarted in both the UAE and Oman, it has been determined to postpone the series originally scheduled to be held in Nepal from March 10 to 20 at Tribhuvan University International Cricket Ground Kirtipur. The UAE cricket team was scheduled to depart for Nepal on March 6; however, that will no longer happen. CAN has announced that the tri-series will be rescheduled for a future date.

“In light of the current situation in the Middle East, the CWC League 2 matches scheduled to begin on March 10 in Kathmandu have been postponed until further notice. The affected fixtures include the matches involving Oman, the UAE, and Nepal. The rescheduled dates will be announced in the coming days following further consultations,” CAN said.
