Kane Williamson to Miss NZ vs WI ODI Series 2025, Focuses on Test Preparation
Kane Williamson will not play in New Zealand’s ODI series against the West Indies. The star batter wants to manage his workload and focus on preparing for Test matches. The 34-year-old recently retired from T20 internationals and has decided to skip the three-match ODI series starting on November 16 in Christchurch.
Williamson made his choice as New Zealand revealed a 14-member squad for the ODI series, with all-rounder Mitchell Santner set to lead the team. Fast bowler Matt Henry returns after missing the Champions Trophy and recent limited-overs games because of an injury. This series will also act as useful preparation for the upcoming World Test Championship matches against the West Indies beginning on December 2.
Even though Kane Williamson is New Zealand’s highest run-scorer in ODIs with 7,256 runs at an average of 48.70, he has said that he wants to focus on formats where he can perform his best both physically and mentally. He has chosen to skip this series to stay in top shape for the upcoming Test matches. New Zealand will face the West Indies in ODIs at Christchurch, Napier and Hamilton from November 16 to 22 before turning their attention to Test cricket.

The squad selection gave the selectors a tough time as many key players are still injured. Mohammad Abbas, Finn Allen, Lockie Ferguson, Adam Milne, Will O’Rourke, Glenn Phillips, and Ben Sears are all unavailable. Blair Tickner, who did well against England has earned another chance in the team.
Off the field, Kane Williamson has taken up a new role in cricket, he has joined the Lucknow Super Giants (LSG) as a strategic advisor ahead of IPL 2026 a move started by team owner Dr. Sanjiv Goenka.
