Joe Root Returns as England Test Captain Amid Ben Stokes Investigation

joe rootJoe Root has been named England's interim captain for the second Test against New Zealand, which is set to begin at The Oval on June 17. The former skipper will lead the side after regular captain Ben Stokes was made unavailable for selection while an England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB) investigation remains ongoing.

The ECB is currently investigating Stokes and fast bowler Gus Atkinson over their alleged involvement in an incident at a nightclub following England's victory in the first Test at Lord's. In an official statement, the board confirmed that both players have not been considered for selection until the investigation is completed.

Curfew Breach Puts Stokes and Atkinson Under Investigation

According to reports, Stokes and Atkinson breached the team's midnight curfew, which was introduced earlier this year after a series of alcohol-related incidents involving England players during tours of New Zealand and Australia. The pair were reportedly at a London nightclub until the early hours of June 8, with the incident also involving Saracens Rugby Club player Totua Auvaa. Reports suggest an ECB security officer accompanying the players was injured during the altercation.

England have made two changes to their squad for the second Test. Wicketkeeper-batter Jordan Cox and fast bowler Jofra Archer have been drafted into the side in place of Stokes and Atkinson. Archer returns after being rested for the first Test following his participation in the IPL, providing England with an experienced pace option for the crucial match.

The Oval Test marks Root's return to Test captaincy for the first time since stepping down in April 2022, when Stokes succeeded him as skipper. Interestingly, the ECB opted for Root over white-ball captain Harry Brook, who served as vice-captain during the Ashes tour. Brook himself was involved in an off-field controversy last year after a confrontation with a bouncer ahead of an ODI against New Zealand.

Root remains England's most experienced Test captain, having led the side in 64 matches. During his tenure, England recorded 27 victories, suffered 26 defeats, and played out 11 draws. England currently hold a 1-0 lead in the three-match series after securing a commanding 115-run victory in the opening Test at Lord's and will be aiming to seal the series at The Oval under Root's leadership.
