Jasprit Bumrah Likely to Skip Asia Cup, Likely to Play Against West Indies in October: Reports

Jasprit Bumrah Likely to Skip Asia Cup, Likely to Play Against West Indies in October: ReportsAfter finishing the Test series against England, Team India will start getting ready for the Asia Cup 2025. The tournament is set to begin in September and India will hope that their main fast bowler, Jasprit Bumrah stays fit for it. Meanwhile, there is a big update about Bumrah's participation in the Asia Cup.

Interestingly, Jasprit Bumrah has been released from India’s squad for the fifth Test against England. For those who don’t know, the BCCI had already said that Bumrah would play only three out of the five Test matches. This was done as part of a workload management plan to avoid injuries like the ones he faced after playing all five matches in the 2024-25 Border-Gavaskar Trophy.

“It will be a tricky call but Bumrah loves Test cricket and there are World Test Championship points at stake. As far as T20 is concerned, he can play the series against New Zealand in January, which will be a dress rehearsal for the T20 World Cup,” a BCCI source familiar with the selection process told PTI on the condition of anonymity.

“If Bumrah plays in the Asia Cup and India reaches the final, it’s almost impossible for him to also play the series against West Indies in Ahmedabad. The real question is whether India needs him for the West Indies series, or if it’s better he returns after a month-long break to play in the Asia Cup and then the two Tests against South Africa. That decision will be up to Ajit Agarkar and Gautam Gambhir.” Source added.

Bumrah Faces Criticism Amid Strategic Rest and Future Test Plans

Bumrah’s decision to skip two Test matches faced a lot of criticism with some people questioning his dedication and future in Test cricket. Many wanted him to play in the final Test at The Oval, especially since India was trailing 1-2 in the series. But Bumrah stuck to the plan. He played in the matches at Leeds, Lord's and Manchester, where he took 14 wickets at an average of 26. For the fifth Test, India made four changes to the squad Bumrah, Rishabh Pant, Shardul Thakur and Anshul Kamboj were replaced by Prasidh Krishna, Dhruv Jurel, Karun Nair and Akash Deep.

According to a PTI report, Jasprit Bumrah might not play all five matches in long Test series anymore. India’s next full-length Test series is against Australia at home in 2027, but before that, they’ll be playing shorter two-match series against teams like West Indies and South Africa. Bumrah didn’t play the fifth Test against England, and this was a planned decision by the BCCI to manage his workload and keep him fit for big upcoming tournaments like the Asia Cup 2025 and the T20 World Cup 2026.

The 2025 Asia Cup will be played in the UAE from September 9 to 28 in the T20 format. India will face UAE on September 10, Pakistan on September 14 and Oman on September 19. If they finish in the top two, they’ll enter the Super Fours. The final will be held on September 28.
