Jacob Bethell's Champions Trophy spot uncertain, Banton on standby
England's batter Jacob Bethell is facing a race against time to be fit for the ICC Champions Trophy after suffering a left hamstring injury. A 21-year-old player was ruled out of the second ODI against India in Cuttack and will also miss the final match in Ahmedabad on Wednesday. With wicketkeeper Jamie Smith still recovering from a calf injury, England had to get creative in the second game, bringing in their assistant coaches, Marcus Trescothick and Paul Collingwood, as substitute fielders.
To cover for Bethell, Somerset’s Tom Banton has been called up and will join the squad in India on Monday. The severity of Bethell's injury will be assessed in the coming days, but with England’s first Champions Trophy match against Australia in Lahore less than two weeks away, his participation remains uncertain. There is hope that Smith will recover in time, as he took part in warm-ups on Sunday. England must finalize squad changes by February 12.
Banton Seeks Opportunity for Career Revival
Bethell made a strong impression in the first ODI, scoring 51 runs and taking 1 for 18 with his left-arm spin. After a Test series in New Zealand last year, where he scored three half-centuries and averaged 52, he has become a key player under head coach Brendon McCullum.
Banton now has a chance to restart his England career. The 26-year-old last played for England in 2020 and scored just three fifties in four ODIs and 16 T20Is. He recently scored 493 runs in 11 outings for MI Emirates, including two centuries, as the franchise reached the Eliminator stage where they were defeated by Sharjah Warriors.
