IPL vs PSL: Pakistan's PSL 11 Might Overlap Again with IPL 2026 Due to Busy Schedule
Is trouble brewing again for Pakistan Super League (PSL) teams? In 2026, the league might face another scheduling challenge, as the ICC T20 World Cup is expected to take place in February-March in India and Sri Lanka. Because of this, the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) may have to move the PSL to a later date. Like this year, the tournament could again be pushed to April-May a time when the IPL usually takes center stage in world cricket. The PSL usually happens in February and March, but this year it had to be moved to April and May because Pakistan is hosting the ICC Champions Trophy. That meant it clashed with the IPL schedule.
There was an idea to hold the PSL in December-January, but because some important issues haven’t been sorted out, it’s unlikely to happen that early. Instead, the PCB might use that time to host the domestic Pentangular Cup, which will feature top players. Earlier this year, it was announced that the PSL would become its own company, and Salman Naseer has taken over as CEO. But so far, no other key roles have been filled.
PSL 11 Faces Scheduling Pressure Due to T20 World Cup, IPL
Now that 10 seasons of the PSL are done, the value of the six current teams will be reviewed, and franchise fees are likely to go up by 25%. Back in December, all the teams said in writing that they wanted to keep their ownership. But Multan Sultans’ owner, Ali Tareen, has often raised concerns about losing money. Lately, he hasn’t said much, so it’s not clear if he’ll hold on to the team or decide to bid again. Interestingly, Multan Sultans currently pays over one billion rupees each year in fees, making it the most expensive team in the league.
The PCB is facing pressure because broadcasters and sponsors still want the PSL to happen in its usual February-March slot. But with the T20 World Cup 2026 planned for the same time, those dates aren’t available. If PSL 11 is pushed to April-May again it might struggle to get fans’ attention and top players. Earlier in 2025, many players who didn’t get picked by IPL teams ended up in the PSL draft, making it feel like a backup option. For a league trying to match the IPL that’s definitely not a good look.
