India vs England Test Series: Tendulkar-Anderson Trophy Unveiled, Pataudi Medal for Winning Captain
The debate over the name of the trophy for India’s tour of England is finally coming to an end. The "Anderson–Tendulkar Trophy" will be officially announced on June 19, just a day before India and England play the first Test at Headingley.
Trophy Renamed with Respect, Pataudi Legacy to Continue
According to RevSportz, there won’t be a big event to reveal the new name of the trophy, mainly as a mark of respect for those who lost their lives in the recent plane crash in Ahmedabad. Instead, the announcement will be made through an official press release. Along with that, there will be pre-recorded messages from cricket legends Sachin Tendulkar and James Anderson, after whom the series is now named.
Even though the series trophy is getting a new name, the legacy of Iftikhar Ali Khan Pataudi won’t be forgotten. As a respectful gesture, the BCCI and ECB have decided that the winning captain will be given the Pataudi Medal for Excellence at the end of the series.
Pataudi Name Lives On with Support from Tendulkar and Shah
This decision came after quiet efforts by Sachin Tendulkar and ICC Chairman Jay Shah. They spoke to the Pataudi family and both cricket boards to make sure the name of the old trophy would still be respected. The Pataudi family has agreed and given their support.
Named originally to commemorate India’s 75 years in Test cricket in 2007, the Pataudi Trophy had become synonymous with the rivalry on English soil. This latest update now offers a graceful middle ground, where Tendulkar and Anderson headline a new legacy, and the Pataudi name continues as well.
