IND vs ENG 1st Highlights Day 1: Gill and Jaiswal Tons Power India to Dominant 359/3 on Day 1 Against England
Few would have imagined India ending Day 1 at 359/3, especially after Ben Stokes chose to bowl first on a tricky Headingley pitch under overcast skies. But Day 1 of the IND vs ENG series opener turned out to be nothing like expected. A young Indian side missing big names like Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma came out all guns blazing. Yashasvi Jaiswal smashed a century in his very first Test innings in England, and new captain Shubman Gill followed it up with a classy hundred in his first innings as skipper. England’s bowling looked flat, and India fully took advantage.
It was clearly India’s day, while England’s bowlers had a tough time without their main fast bowlers. Ben Stokes did his best, picking up two wickets to slow things down, but it wasn’t enough. Still, to understand how the day really went, let’s go back and look at how things happened step by step.
Sudharsan’s Debut Ends Early With a Duck
Just like in Australia, KL Rahul looked solid but couldn’t carry on. He was the first to fall in the morning session, out for 42 off 78 balls. He was batting smoothly but ended up chasing a wide ball from Brydon Carse and edged it to Joe Root in the slips. As for Sai Sudharsan, it was a tough start to his Test career. He was out for a duck after going after a wide delivery from Ben Stokes, only to edge it to keeper Jamie Smith down the leg side. It was a clear reminder that in Test cricket, patience matters and Sai will definitely take that lesson to heart.

Yashasvi Jaiswal is slowly becoming India’s most trusted batter. After scoring a century in Australia, he has now impressed again with a solid 101 in his first innings in England. It wasn’t the easiest or the smoothest knock, but it got the job done. He found it hard to score on the leg side but played some smart and stylish shots through the off side to keep the scoreboard ticking all this while battling painful cramps. In just 20 Tests, he already has 1,899 runs with an average of over 54. That’s seriously impressive.
One of the best parts of Jaiswal’s innings was how clearly he communicated with Shubman Gill while running between the wickets. To avoid any mix-ups, he even asked Gill to say a loud “no” when refusing a run and it worked really well. After Jaiswal got out, Rishabh Pant made sure Ben Stokes didn’t get on top. On just his second ball, he charged down the pitch and hit it straight over the bowler’s head a clear message that he meant business. With his usual unorthodox style, Pant brought up his 16th Test fifty and also crossed 3000 runs in Test cricket.
Rishabh Pant reached a big landmark by scoring 3000 runs in Test cricket, and he did it in just 76 innings only Adam Gilchrist got there faster in 63. That’s a huge deal, especially since Pant now stands just behind MS Dhoni among Indian wicketkeepers with the most Test runs. This wasn’t his usual attacking knock, but he still finished strong with 65 runs.
Gill Silences Doubts with Commanding 127 on Captaincy Debut

Shubman Gill, on the other hand, surprised everyone. People just hoped he would get some runs as the new captain, but he went above and beyond. He looked confident, played attacking shots and kept the scoreboard moving with a strike rate of over 70. His sixth Test hundred came at the perfect time and gave India a great start to the series. He also reached 2000 runs in just his 33rd Test and ended the day unbeaten on 127.
