Ben Stokes Retirement Rumours Grow Following London Nightclub Investigation

England captain Ben Stokes is expected to meet his advisor to discuss his future as the investigation into the London nightclub incident continues. Stokes and fellow England pacer Gus Atkinson were reportedly involved in a fight with Totoa Auvaa after the first Test between England and New Zealand. The incident also left an England security officer needing stitches. Earlier reports suggested that Stokes could even consider retirement following the latest controversy.

“Offered the chance to resign on Monday, the 35-year old may yet take the chance to step down and carry on through to the end of his central contract, in 2027, after the next Ashes. He could also opt to relinquish the captaincy and take an indefinite break from the game,” the report stated.

Ben Stokes had recently returned to international cricket after recovering from a serious facial injury. His previous Test match was against Australia in January 2026. The controversy surfaced shortly after England's 115-run victory over New Zealand national cricket team in the first Test at Lord's Cricket Ground.

The match ended inside two days with 35 wickets falling, and the pitch was later rated "unsatisfactory" by the International Cricket Council. The controversy arrives at the worst possible time for England. Only months ago, the team introduced a strict midnight curfew after repeated criticism of players’ behaviour during the Ashes tour of Australia. That tour triggered debate about whether England had developed an unhealthy drinking culture.
