If You Play Good Cricket, You Don't Need PR: MS Dhoni on Social Media and Publicity
MS Dhoni is known all around the world as an amazing cricket player and once the former captain of the Indian cricket team opened up on his views on using social media and dealing with public phenomena. Even though Dhoni is extremely well-known, he never delved too into using social media. Dhoni said his team, working behind the scenes, kept telling him he should use the internet to let more people know about him but he always thought that his ability to play cricket was enough to show what he could do.
Dhoni began playing cricket in 2004, and through the months and years, he saw social media sites, Twitter and Instagram, become extremely popular, but he always thought playing excellent cricket mattered significantly more than so much publicity. He was apparently concentrated on keeping it simple and holding to the game instead of chasing after fame, which really shows how humble he is. That's something his fans respect about him.
During Eurogrip Tred Talks, Dhoni mentioned, “I have never been a big fan of social media. Throughout, I have had so many managers and all of them keep pushing. I started playing in 2004; Twitter got popular later on, after which Instagram came in. All the managers told me, ‘You should do some PR, build this, and build that’. I had the same answer that if you play good cricket, you don’t need PR,”

MS Dhoni's Journey to Greatness
Dhoni started his international cricket career on a rough note, getting out for zero runs in an ODI game against Bangladesh. He didn't let that stop him, and soon became known as one of India's top cricket players. He showed his leadership skills in 2007 by guiding the team to win the first-ever Men's T20 World Cup. Dhoni didn't stop there in 2011, under his captaincy, India won the ODI World Cup. Continuing to collect more victories, in 2013, Dhoni led his team to win the Champions Trophy, making him famous for winning all the important ICC trophies.
By 2020, Dhoni wasn't playing cricket for his country anymore. He chose to leave Test cricket behind in 2014 following a match in Melbourne. Yet his passion for the game hasn't faded a bit, he's preparing carefully for his 18th season in the IPL in 2025. From Dhoni's journey, we see that being honest with yourself, and pushing your abilities, is far more crucial than trying to become well-known or going after what everyone else thinks is amazing.
