ICC Champions Trophy 2025: Saim Ayub Ruled Out, Replaced by Rising Middle-Order Star

ICC Champions Trophy 2025: Saim Ayub Ruled Out, Replaced by Rising Middle-Order Star

Pakistan cricket is facing pressure to select its team for the Champions Trophy 2025 after Saim Ayub twisted his ankle in the first Test against South Africa. If Ayub misses up to six weeks of action, then national selectors might look for a replacement for that slot, and Khushdil Shah has emerged as one of the prime contenders. According to Samaa TV, Pakistan might replace Ayub with the dynamic all-rounder if he doesn't get fit in time for the tournament.

Khushdil Shah is one quite intriguing choice for the team as he is a big hitter. Having played only 10 ODIs and having scored only 199 runs in those ODIs, his strike rate of 94.76 is indeed marvelous, which makes him an excellent performer for the tournament. The selectors have realized that the team needs a big hitter in the middle order; Shah would be the most fitting choice for this all-important role.

The PCB is considering several options to replace Ayub, including Shan Masood and Imam-ul-Haq. The second opener's slot is still not confirmed though Fakhar Zaman is likely to retain his place as the first-choice opener. The final decision will depend on the medical assessment of Ayub's ankle injury and whether he will be fit in time for the tournament.

Considering the Champions Trophy record of flat pitches and highly scoring matches, the right replacement is an essential part of Pakistan's strategy. Khushdil Shah can potentially be the match-winner for Pakistan; his addition would provide the team with much-needed power and flexibility in their batting line-up going into the coming weeks.
