Dewald Brevis Declines Delhi Capitals’ IPL 2025 Offer, Joins Chennai Super Kings Mid-Season
Young South African cricketer Dewald Brevis was reportedly offered a chance to join Delhi Capitals (DC) as a replacement for Harry Brook in IPL 2025. However, Brevis turned down the offer. Instead, he later joined Chennai Super Kings (CSK) midway through the season.
Harry Brook missed his second IPL season in a row, choosing not to play in IPL 2025 due to personal reasons. The England batter was bought by Delhi Capitals for ₹6.25 crore at the IPL 2025 mega auction. With only three league matches left in the season, DC brought in Afghanistan's Sediqullah Atal as a replacement for Brook.
According to Chadwick Drive on Substack, Dewald Brevis was contacted by the Delhi Capitals to step in for Harry Brook during IPL 2025. However, Brevis turned down the offer after finding out that the team couldn’t guarantee him a regular spot in the playing XI.
Dewald Brevis Approached by Delhi Capitals as Replacement for Harry Brook
Brevis had planned to play for Hampshire in the T20 Blast, County Championship, and One-Day Cup. When IPL teams reached out to him, the first thing he wanted to know was whether he’d get to play in the matches, not just sit on the bench and train.
Brevis felt that while the IPL offers valuable learning opportunities from top coaches and players, those lessons truly deliver when tested in real match situations, not just in the nets. It was learned that game time was non-negotiable.
Dewald Brevis said no to an IPL offer from the Delhi team because they couldn’t promise him a spot in the playing XI. But just a few weeks later, things changed when Chennai Super Kings came calling. Their coach, Stephen Fleming, and MS Dhoni personally assured him that he would be a regular in their team.
Dewald Brevis Might Be Retained by Chennai Super Kings for IPL 2026
In his IPL debut for Chennai Super Kings, Dewald Brevis scored 42 off 24 balls before being dismissed by a stunning catch from Kamindu Mendis. He passed 30 runs five times out of six matches, including two half-centuries.
His bold and attacking style gave CSK the boost they really needed. If he had joined the team earlier, his efforts might have made a big difference in how their season turned out. Brevis could be retained by the Super Kings for the next edition.
