Champions Trophy 2025: England Faces Setback as Brydon Carse Ruled Out of Crucial Match Against Afghanistan
England has made a squad change for the 2025 Champions Trophy, with leg-spinning all-rounder Rehan Ahmed replacing injured fast bowler Brydon Carse. The ICC Event Technical Committee has approved the replacement ahead of England’s key group-stage matches.
Carse, 29, played in England's first match of the tournament against Australia. The defending champions successfully chased a tough target and defeated Jos Buttler's team by five wickets.
Carse has been suffering from an injury on his left foot, which has made it hard for him to bowl. His injury got worse after the first match, so he had to miss England’s practice session at the Gaddafi Stadium in Lahore on Monday. Carse might not be able to play for the rest of the tournament, so the team management decided to replace him with Ahmed.
"England fast bowler Brydon Carse will return home this week to continue his recovery from a toe injury. Durham and England bowling all-rounder Brydon Carse has been ruled out for the remainder of the ICC Men’s Champions Trophy due to a left toe injury," ECB wrote in a statement.
"Carse sustained the injury during England’s opening Group B match against Australia on Saturday in Lahore. Leicestershire leg-spinner Rehan Ahmed has been named as his replacement and will join the squad in Pakistan later this week," the Board added.
The 19-year-old leg-spinner has played six ODIs for England. His selection gives the team another spin option along with Adil Rashid. England might change their team as they try to reach the semi-finals.
Jamie Overton, who didn’t play in the first match, might get a chance in the next game against Afghanistan as England tries to bounce back from their opening loss.
The ICC's Event Technical Committee decides if a team can replace a player during tournaments. It includes ICC officials, host country members, and a neutral former international cricketer.
As England prepares for their next group match against Afghanistan on Wednesday, bringing Ahmed into the squad adds something new to their bowling attack. His presence might give them the lift they need to bounce back from their first defeat.
