Brendan Taylor Returns to Zimbabwe Test Squad After 3.5-Year ICC Ban

For Zimbabwean cricket, a significant moment has arrived. Former captain Brendan Taylor is set to make his international return after serving a three-and-a-half-year ban by the ICC. The veteran last played for Zimbabwe in September 2021, and now, nearly four years later, he will once again don the national colors.

Former Zimbabwe captain Brendan Taylor has been officially added to the national Test squad for the two-match Test series against New Zealand, which begins on Wednesday, July 1st. The 39-year-old has been training with the team in Bulawayo over the past few days, preparing for his return after a long absence from international cricket.

Craig Ervine, the current Zimbabwe captain, confirmed Taylor’s availability for the second Test, as reported by Herald Online. Ervine expressed his excitement at having Taylor back in the squad. The former skipper is expected to be in contention for the second Test, which starts on August 7 in Bulawayo.

Taylor’s return follows the end of a 3.5-year ban imposed by the ICC for failing to report a corrupt approach and substance use in 2019. One of Zimbabwe’s finest-ever players, Taylor has scored 9,938 international runs and holds the Zimbabwe record for most international centuries (17). If he features in the second Test, Taylor will become the earliest debutant among all active Test cricketers, having made his debut in 2004. With six Test centuries, which is joint second-most for Zimbabwe, his return adds valuable experience to the team. As Zimbabwe looks to rebuild with the 2027 ODI World Cup on the horizon, Taylor’s leadership could prove vital both on and off the field.
