Bengaluru Set to Build India’s Second-Largest Cricket Stadium in Bommasandra with 80,000 Capacity

Bengaluru Set to Build India’s Second-Largest Cricket Stadium in Bommasandra with 80,000 CapacityBengaluru, known for its love of cricket, is set to get а major sporting upgrade. The Karnataka government as approved a ₹1,650-crore sports complex in Surya City, Bommasandra, which will feature a modern cricket stadium with 80,000 seats. Once completed, it will become India’s second-largest cricket stadium, just after the one in Ahmedabad, bringing a big boost to the city’s sports scene.

The ₹1,650 crore project will be fully funded by the Karnataka Housing Board (KHB), with no financial help from the state government. Spanning 100 acres, the complex will offer facilities for both indoor and outdoor sports. Besides the cricket stadium, it will include spaces for eight indoor and outdoor sports, modern gyms, training centers, swimming pools, guest houses, hostels, three-star and five-star hotels and a convention hall to host international events.

Plans for a new stadium in Bengaluru are moving forward after the tragic stampede outside the M. Chinnaswamy Stadium during RCB’s victory parade, which led to the loss of 11 lives and left several injured. Following the incident, the T20 Maharaja Trophy was moved to Mysuru. Currently, the authorities have not granted permission to host three league games and a semifinal for the 2025 Women’s World Cup at the Chinnaswamy Stadium. The stadium has also faced scrutiny, with the Justice John Michael Cunha Commission declaring it unfit for large events.

"The government has not done anything wrong. This incident is saddening, but no misstep was taken by the administration. Legal action has been taken against those found guilty, so there is no question of embarrassment for the government. The government will look into shifting the cricket stadium to another location. Such an unpleasant incident should not happen under any government. Personally, this incident has hurt me and the government," the Karnataka CM said.

The Chief Minister confirmed that five police officers were suspended in connection with the mishap, and both the intelligence chief and the Chief Minister’s political secretary were replaced. He stated, "Five police officers have been suspended in this case. The intelligence chief and the chief minister's political secretary have been replaced. The case has been taken seriously and appropriate action has been taken."

The new stadium will be built in Bommasandra on a 100-acre site, much larger than the current 17-acre Chinnaswamy Stadium. It’s hoped that this larger space with better planning will help avoid the overcrowding issues seen at the old venue.
