BCCI Fines Riyan Parag for Slow Over-Rate in RR's First Win

Rajasthan Royals finally secured their first win of IPL 2025, defeating Chennai Super Kings by six runs on Sunday (March 30). It wasn’t all good news for their captain, Riyan Parag. Despite the victory, he has been fined ₹12 lakh for maintaining a slow over-rate while defending their total.

The BCCI fined Riyan Parag on Monday because the Rajasthan Royals bowled their overs too slowly in the match against Chennai at the Barsapara Stadium. Since this was the team’s first slow over-rate offence in this IPL season, Parag was fined ₹12 lakh under Article 2.22 of the IPL's Code of Conduct, which deals with over-rate rules.

Hardik had to serve a one-match ban because the Mumbai Indians were found guilty of breaking the IPL Code of Conduct twice in the 2024 season. As a result, he missed MI’s first match of IPL 2025 against Chennai Super Kings. However, before this season started, the BCCI announced a rule change. Now, captains won’t be banned for slow over-rates. Instead, they will get demerit points depending on how serious the offence is.

Sri Lanka's wrist spinner Wanindu Hasaranga took full advantage of Chennai's struggles against spin, picking up four wickets for 35 runs. In a tense final over, Sandeep Sharma held his nerve, successfully defending 20 runs and dismissing MS Dhoni to seal the game. Earlier, Nitish Rana played an important knock, scoring a half-century that helped Rajasthan post a good total.
