BCCI Confirms Agarkar’s Continuation as Selector Chief; Committee Changes Expected Post-AGM

Just two days after announcing India’s squad for the upcoming Asia Cup, Ajit Agarkar got a big vote of trust from the BCCI. His contract as chairman of selectors has been extended until June 2026. Although the news came out on Thursday, the extension was reportedly decided much earlier, even before the 2025 Indian Premier League.
BCCI Extends Ajit Agarkar’s Term Amid Leadership Changes and Team Transition
According to a report in The Indian Express, the BCCI had already decided to retain Agarkar a few months ago, impressed by his handling of a challenging transitional phase for Indian cricket. Since taking charge in June 2023, the former India pacer has overseen a period marked by both success and generational change.
Under his leadership, India broke its long-standing drought at ICC events, winning the T20 World Cup in 2024 and the Champions Trophy in early 2025, while also reaching the final of the ODI World Cup in 2023 on home soil.
Agarkar’s time as chairman has also been marked by some important leadership changes. Under his guidance, the selectors made Shubman Gill the Test captain and Suryakumar Yadav the T20I captain. The team has also been handling the slow retirement of cricket stars like Virat Kohli, Rohit Sharma, and Ravichandran Ashwin. Right now, Kohli and Rohit play only in ODIs, and Ashwin has stopped playing all formats.
BCCI to Make Changes in Selection Committees After AGM
The current selection committee has SS Das, Subroto Banerjee, Ajay Ratra, and S Sharath, along with Agarkar. But changes are expected after the BCCI’s annual general meeting in September. The report says Sharath, who used to lead the junior selection committee before joining the senior panel in January 2023, will likely be replaced because he is close to completing the maximum four years allowed in selection roles under BCCI rules.
The board is said to be planning to invite new applications for a replacement, but no final decision has been made yet about Das and Banerjee. Officials seem generally happy with the current panel and might only make one change.
BCCI will also open applications for new appointments to the senior women’s and junior men’s selection committees. Neetu David, chair of the women’s panel, along with Arati Vaidya and Mithu Mukherjee, will complete their five-year tenures this season.
