Bangladesh Requests ICC to Change T20 World Cup 2026 Venues After Mustafizur Rahman IPL Saga
In the recent update, the Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) is set to approach the International Cricket Council (ICC) with venue changes for the T20 World Cup championship to be held in 2026.
Bangladesh Eyes Pakistan-Style Plan for T20 World Cup 2026 Campaign?
This is in the wake of increasing India-Bangladesh tensions and the BCCI asking the IPL franchise Kolkata Knight Riders to release Bangladesh’s Mustafizur Rahman because of the immense public outrage. Contrary to a previous report that indicated Bangladesh would carry on with its T20 World Cup Championship fixtures in India.
According to Telecom Asia Sport Report, a BCB insider revealed that Bangladesh’s entry into the T20 World Cup 2026 in India will depend on the ICC. But if an exemption is obtained, Bangladesh might take a cue from Pakistan and play all its WC matches in a neutral site, Sri Lanka.
For the sake of clarity, it must be pointed out that India and Sri Lanka will co-host this big tournament, and Pakistan will play all its matches in Sri Lanka. This news came a few days after BCCI assured visas to Bangladesh cricketers.
The BCB official said that,
"I do not know how to react regarding the issue of releasing Mustafizur. This is their internal issue, but regarding playing in the World Cup, it is an ICC event. They will decide on it after careful consideration."
This will be taken up at the ICC at the earliest, as the tournament starts from February 7, said the ICC official, further explaining the matter at hand. The issue started after the release of Mustafizur, with the BCCI secretary citing the unrest that had developed across the country over allowing a Bangladesh player to take part in IPL 2026, and tensions between the two countries. Included in the U-turns experienced by the BCCI was the postponement of its tour to Bangladesh, saying it will be placed on hold until the Indian government gives its approval.
