The team is owned by the Indian Sun Group, coached by Adrian Birrell, and was founded in 2022. Their major achievements include winning the SA20 tournament twice, in 2023 and 2024, making them the only team to win the title consecutively. Sunrisers Eastern Cape are the current and most successful champions of the SA20 league, having won the title three times in the four seasons held so far. They secured their latest victory by defeating the Pretoria Capitals in the 2026 final at Newlands, Cape Town.
