Yashasvi Jaiswal's resilient half-century helped India turn around their first-innings deficit into a 52-run lead against England on the second day of the fifth Test at the Oval. Despite being dropped twice, Jaiswal remained unbeaten on 51 off just 49 balls, guiding India to 75-2 in their second innings when play was halted due to bad light.

India's bowlers took control as 15 wickets fell on a pitch that favored them, but the batsmen who took risks were rewarded. The first innings concluded quickly, with India all out for 224. England's openers Ben Duckett and Zak Crawley initially dominated, scoring nearly 100 runs in just 13 overs. However, India's fightback saw them dismiss England for 247, restricting their first-innings lead to a mere 23 runs. It was confirmed before play that England would be without all-rounder Chris Woakes for the rest of the match due to a shoulder injury sustained on Thursday.

India resumed their innings on 204-6, but their hopes of reaching 250 were quickly dashed. Only 20 more runs were added in 5.4 overs before they were all out for 224. Karun Nair, who had an overnight score of 52, was eventually dismissed for 57 by Josh Tongue. Washington Sundar's brief stay at the crease ended when he was dismissed by Gus Atkinson. Atkinson, playing his first Test since May due to a hamstring issue, took 5-33 in 22 overs, his fourth career five-for and first in Tests at his home ground.

England's openers started aggressively, with Duckett and Crawley scoring 92 runs in just 13 overs. Duckett was eventually caught behind off Akash Deep for 43, while Crawley was dismissed for 64 after hitting 14 boundaries. From 129-2, England's innings crumbled as Prasidh Krishna and Mohammed Siraj found their rhythm. Joe Root and Ollie Pope were both dismissed by Siraj, while Harry Brook's attempt to lead a comeback ended when he was caught by a Siraj yorker for 53. Siraj finished with 4-86, and Krishna took 4-62, making England's first-innings total of 247 seem reasonable.

India's reply began with urgency. Jaiswal's edged cover drive flew through Brook's hands at second slip, turning into the fifth boundary he hit off Atkinson in the fifth over. The four runs also put India back in the lead. Jaiswal's opening partner, Lokesh Rahul, scored only 7 off 28 deliveries before giving a catch to first slip off Tongue. Jaiswal survived being dropped on 40 by Liam Dawson at deep fine leg, but Sai Sudharsan fell for 11 to a low Atkinson shooter in the last over of the day due to bad light.
