Will the Bronco Test Decide the Future of Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma?

[ Poll: NZAdgvLY ]

The new Bronco Test will not affect the future of senior players like Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma as they prepare for their return to the Indian team during the Australia tour later this year. At this stage, both Kohli and Rohit are only playing ODI cricket.

Kohli and Rohit Safe from Bronco Test Impact in Team Selection

There was a time in Indian cricket when the yo-yo test played a big role in selection. During Virat Kohli’s captaincy, it was strict, any player who failed the yo-yo test was dropped, no matter how famous he was. Back then, the BCCI had fixed 16.5 as the minimum passing score.

The yo-yo test itself was a test of both speed and endurance, where players had to run shuttles back and forth with a timer, covering distances like 1,200 meters in 6 minutes and close to 2 kilometers in 12 minutes. This test calculated everything, including players’ endurance, stamina, and recovery ability. For years, the yo-yo test became the ultimate criterion test for the players’ fitness.

Over time, people started questioning the test since every player has a different body type, strengths, and weaknesses. Some felt the yo-yo test was too strict and didn’t truly show how fit a player was. Because of this, the scores were reportedly dropped.

The BCCI has now brought in the Bronco Test, a fitness test borrowed from rugby. This test is much tougher and more demanding than the yo-yo test. In the yo-yo test, players get small breaks while running, but in the Bronco Test, there are no breaks at all. Players have to keep running nonstop at a set speed and distance. The test checks how long they can keep going under pressure without giving up. Many fitness trainers believe it is one of the best tests because it shows a player’s real stamina and endurance.

Yo-Yo & Bronco Tests: Fitness Check, Not Selection Rule

Now, the big question is what will happen if players fail the yo-yo or Bronco test? Well, a Revsportz journalist revealed that the players won’t be rejected even if they fail the yo-yo or Bronco tests, which means there will be no impact on Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma’s selection. Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma will be considered for the selection even if they register low scores. Instead, these numbers are taken as an indicator of where you stand physically.

In the last few months, even some of India’s fittest cricketers have not been able to clear the yo-yo test. These are players known for their fitness. But according to a journalist, the Indian team no longer looks at these tests as a simple “pass or fail.” There is still a set number as a benchmark, but it is not used to decide selection. The Bronco Test is now more about checking a player’s consistency, effort, and ability to stay fit through long international seasons, rather than just focusing on the final score.

So, if a player fails the yo-yo or the Bronco, it does not mean he will not be selected for the team. It means he has to work harder, improve his conditioning, and show that he is capable of handling the grind. These tests are now used as a measure of discipline, not as the final selection criterion.
