Will RCB Face Ban from IPL Like CSK and RR After the Bengaluru Stampede Tragedy ?
The last few days have been heartbreaking for the newly crowned Indian Premier League (IPL) champions, Royal Challengers Bengaluru. After their big win on June 3, the team celebrated in Bengaluru on June 4. But sadly, the celebrations took a dark turn as unexpected events led to major chaos. Many RCB fans rushed into the Chinnaswamy Stadium trying to see their players, but this caused a stampede. Sadly, more than 11 people lost their lives and at least 50 others were injured.
This caused a lot of anger on social media because, even though the police warned against holding the event, the team went ahead with it, leading to this tragedy. Reports say an FIR has been filed against RCB’s star player Virat Kohli, and the team’s marketing head has been arrested. Many people are also asking for the franchise to get at least a two-year ban, just like CSK and RR faced.
Opposition parties are demanding resignations from top state government officials. On Saturday, two leaders from the Karnataka State Cricket Association (KSCA) resigned. A Shankar and ES Jairam, the secretary and treasurer of KSCA, stepped down that day. The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) is now in a tough spot. The IPL is its biggest event a multi-billion dollar tournament that depends on its brand, sponsors and loyal fans. But if they don’t act after this tragedy, it could seriously hurt their reputation.
So far, BCCI has tried to stay away from the victory celebration, calling it just a franchise event. BCCI secretary Devajit Saikia said it was “an unfortunate incident,” but whether any action will be taken against the franchise is still unclear.

What Are the Chances of an RCB Ban from IPL?
While IPL teams run as business entities, their involvement is controlled by contracts with the BCCI, which include rules about behavior and public safety. If investigators find that RCB’s management was seriously careless, the BCCI might have to take action not just to deliver justice but also to protect the league’s reputation.
Banning a team isn’t new in the IPL. Chennai Super Kings and Rajasthan Royals were banned for two years back in 2015 over spot-fixing. But this case with RCB is more serious because lives were lost. If they are found responsible, the BCCI could take strong action. The Karnataka government has already made tough moves, arresting franchise officials and suspending some government workers. Although there’s no proof that RCB players pushed for the celebration, the management did ignore warnings. It was a shared failure between RCB and the state officials. If the investigation finds clear evidence against RCB, the IPL might have to make the tough call to ban the team.
