Will M Chinnaswamy Stadium Be Shifted? Karnataka CM Hints at Relocation After RCB Parade Tragedy
The Karnataka government is now thinking about moving the M Chinnaswamy Stadium out of Bengaluru to another city. This comes after a tragic stampede outside the stadium, right after RCB won their first IPL title. It was supposed to be a joyful moment, but things turned heartbreaking on June 4 when 11 people lost their lives and many others were hurt as huge crowds gathered to celebrate the team’s return home.
Karnataka Chief Minister Siddaramaiah has said that the government is thinking about moving the cricket stadium out of Bengaluru to another city. This comes after the tragic stampede that happened outside the M Chinnaswamy Stadium. Speaking about the incident, he said such tragedies should never happen under any government, and admitted it left him deeply shaken.
“We’re looking into the possibility of shifting the stadium to a different location,” the CM said, according to news agency ANI.
KSCA Top Officials Resign; Police Officers Suspended After Stampede
It’s important to note that the M Chinnaswamy Stadium is currently the only stadium in Karnataka that can host international cricket matches. It’s also the home ground for RCB. Following the tragic incident in central Bengaluru, five police officers were suspended last week. On top of that, both the treasurer and secretary of the Karnataka State Cricket Association (KSCA) stepped down, saying they did so on moral grounds.
At the same time, a senior police officer revealed that he had sent a written warning to the government before the event, raising concerns about poor security and lack of crowd control.
The chaos outside M Chinnaswamy Stadium started after an RCB social media post later deleted called on fans to join a victory parade. While the official celebration at Vidhan Soudha went on without issues, the uncontrolled crowd near the stadium led to a deadly stampede.
The Karnataka High Court has taken up the matter on its own and paused any strict action against KSCA officials until June 16. A police case has been filed against KSCA, RCB, and DNA. So far, four people have been arrested, including RCB’s head of marketing.
