Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma Eye 2027 World Cup: Can the Legends Overcome the Odds?

Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma, the stalwarts of Indian cricket, have long been the driving force behind the national team. Their journey toward the 2027 ODI World Cup has captivated fans worldwide. After their historic 2024 T20 World Cup victory, both icons retired from T20 Internationals, a calculated move to prolong their careers in ODIs and Tests. Just months later, they once again surprised everyone by announcing their retirement from Test cricket within a span of five days. With their T20I and Test chapters closed, it became clear that the veteran duo was now fully focused on the 2027 ODI World Cup. However, their path to this global tournament appears anything but straightforward.

The Shifting Landscape of Indian Cricket

India's current ODI team is in a period of transition, with a greater emphasis on giving younger players opportunities. This new dynamic means even legends like Kohli and Rohit, who were once guaranteed a spot, now face growing competition and a sense of uncertainty about their place in the squad. The 2023 World Cup was a deeply emotional event for both players. Kohli was chasing his second World Cup title, while Rohit was determined to lift the trophy for the first time as captain. Despite an unbeaten run leading up to the final, India suffered a heartbreaking defeat to Australia, leaving both players—and millions of fans—with unfulfilled dreams.

Age and the Road Ahead

With age no longer on their side, both players are reportedly dedicating significant effort to their fitness and long-term planning. Rohit Sharma, now 38, has reportedly intensified his fitness regimen to ensure he remains in peak physical condition for 2027. Meanwhile, at an RCB event before IPL 2025, Virat Kohli declared that "his next big goal is to win the World Cup." Their commitment is undeniable, yet significant challenges loom. A senior BCCI official acknowledged the situation, stating:

"Yes, this topic will come up soon. The 2027 World Cup is still more than two years away. But by then, both Kohli and Rohit will be around 40. We need a clear roadmap moving forward. New players also deserve opportunities."

A Professional Dialogue Awaits

The BCCI has made it clear it will not force any decisions on Kohli or Rohit. However, an honest and professional conversation is expected to take place in the near future. The same official added:

"Look, they've given everything to Indian cricket. They've achieved almost everything. So, no decisions will be made against their will. But their physical and mental readiness will be key factors."

India is only scheduled to play 27 ODIs until the end of 2026. Most of these matches will be interspersed between Test and T20 series, making it difficult for players—especially those focusing solely on the 50-over format—to maintain their rhythm and form. This presents another significant hurdle for Kohli and Rohit, who are now exclusively playing ODIs.
