T20 World Cup 2028 Host City Selection Begins, Tournament Scheduled for October- November with 20 Teams

The selection of the host cities and stadiums for the 2028 T20 World Cup has begun by the ICC. The tournament will be staged in Australia and New Zealand, and the stadiums have been invited to participate.

There will be around 10 stadiums that will be used for the tournament, which will be staged in both countries. Australia and New Zealand have already qualified as the hosts of the tournament. England, India, Pakistan, South Africa, Sri Lanka, West Indies, and Zimbabwe have also qualified as they reached the Super Eight stage of the 2026 T20 World Cup.

T20 World Cup 2028 to Feature 20 Teams Across Australia and New Zealand

Bangladesh, Ireland, and Afghanistan have also qualified for the tournament on the basis of rankings, whereas the remaining eight teams will qualify by playing matches at the regional level. The matches of the 2028 T20 World Cup will be played between October and November, and there will be 20 teams participating in the tournament. A total of 55 matches will be played, including group matches, Super Eight matches, semi-finals, and the final.

Australia has been given the hosting rights of the T20 World Cup for the second time, after the tournament was held in 2022, where England beat Pakistan in the final, played in Melbourne. Famous stadiums like MCG, SCG, and WACA are likely to be chosen to host the matches of the tournament.

2028 ICC T20 World Cup CEO, Joel Morrison said that,

“The ICC Men’s T20 World Cup in 2028 will be the biggest cricket event ever staged in the southern hemisphere. Australia and New Zealand will host the best players and teams in the world, including arguably the hottest property in sport, reigning champions India,” 

he also added,

“Cricket World Cups are mega events and they deliver significant social, economic and promotional benefits to host cities. Key to maximising these outcomes and executing a world class event is cricket’s commitment to a partnership approach with governments, venues, commercial and broadcast partners and local communities. We look forward to working with prospective partners through this process as we seek to unite and inspire fans globally through a spectacular festival of cricket that extends its benefits far beyond the cricket field,

New Zealand last hosted a major ICC tournament for men in 2015 when they shared the Cricket World Cup. India are the current two-time champions. They won the 2026 Final at home when they defeated New Zealand by 96 runs at the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad.
