T20 World Cup 2026: Donovan Ferreira Ruled Out as SA Likely to Replace Him with Stubbs or Rickelton
The preparations for the T20 World Cup in South Africa have been badly affected due to the injury mentioned above sustained by Donovan Ferreira, who has fractured his shoulder in the Joburg Super Kings (JSK) game against the Pretoria Capitals (PC) in the SA20. Donovan Ferreira is known as a batting all-rounder who has been selected as the finisher and reserve wicket-keeper in the T20 Cricket World Cup 2026. He is currently trying his level best to get recovered as soon as possible to be there in the next T20 World Cup scheduled in February next year.
Donovan Ferreira’s Shoulder Fracture Leaves Big Hole in South Africa’s T20 World Cup 2026 Plans
Ferreira was standing at the cover boundary at the time and dived fully across the field to cut off a certain boundary four that would have been scored on the last ball of their innings for the Capitals. He awkwardly landed due to his left shoulder as he touched the ground and was clearly in pain. Ferreira did not let it deter him from batting as he continued playing in the game. But he was clearly very limited in how much he could extend his arm after he had faced a delivery and had to retire because of pain. After Ferreira played his game, he confirmed that he was definitely in pain and was going to do some scans. These scans revealed a fracture in his shoulder.
This injury will therefore prevent Ferreira from playing for the Super Kings in the rest of the SA20 competition, but it will also be a big blow to the Super Kings as a team since they have to win their match against the Paarl Royals on Monday evening to secure their playoff spot. It has also opened a gap in South Africa's T20 World Cup 2026 squad because, at the moment, only David Miller is seen as a practical end-of-the-innings "finisher".
Ferreira isn't just another member of the team. He is currently the leading destructive middle order T20 batter in the world (based on runs scored and strike rate) for this period (2024) with 1716 runs at a strike rate of 177.08. He was viewed by South African selectors as the X-factor at the number 6/7 batting position, capable of finishing matches, wicketkeeping (if required) and providing assistance with part-time spin bowling. Players with this versatility are few and far between. In T20 SA20, Ferreira bowled in all 5 Matches of JSK, getting wickets with an impressive economy of 7.87 runs per over.

Important to note that Don was also picked as the reserve WK for the WC so if he's ruled out, Rickelton does seem the most likely replacement. #CricketTwitter pic.twitter.com/4oqbLEqL6d
His absence is not the only awkward debating issue the South African team faces. Ryan Rickelton is in blazing form with two SA20 hundreds but he's an opener and not a middle-order force. Tristan Stubbs is a better middle-order force but lacks the confidence to perform well. He never made it to the initial list of players. Stubbs is a poor SA20 performer even though his outfit tops the SA20 table. His outfit’s skipper has scored a meagre 103 runs at a terrible SR of 119.77. Matthew Breetzke can take the fourth spot though none of these candidates are the same as Ferreira. He too likes to open.
Despite this, Rickelton or Breetzke still have a chance, given the doubts over the selection of Tony de Zorzi. The left-handed wicket-keeper is yet to prove his fitness, given the hamstring injury, and has not played any form of cricket since the 2nd ODI against India.
FAQs
Donovan Ferreira was South Africa’s main finisher and backup wicketkeeper, which made him very valuable to the team. With him injured, David Miller is the only reliable finisher left, so selectors now have to look at options like Ryan Rickelton, Tristan Stubbs, or Matthew Breetzke to fill the gap in the middle order.
