Starc withdraws from Champions Trophy, Smith named Australia’s captain

Starc withdraws from Champions Trophy, Smith named Australia’s captainIn a major blow to Australia’s bowling attack, legendary fast bowler Mitchell Starc has decided to withdraw from the upcoming ICC Champions Trophy 2025 in Pakistan. Cricket Australia announced on Wednesday morning that Starc has made his decision and asked for privacy.

Australia’s Pace Attack Hit Hard

Australia was already in trouble after missing Pat Cummins and Josh Hazlewood to injuries last week. Now, Mitchell Starc, who was supposed to lead the bowling attack, is also sidelined.

The 35-year-old left-arm pacer, who has picked up 244 wickets in 127 ODIs, reportedly looked in discomfort due to a left ankle issue while bowling in the second innings of the second Test against Sri Lanka in Galle last week. Following this, he returned to Australia and will not be part of the two-match away ODI series against Sri Lanka, which begins in Colombo on February 12.

Cricket Australia Supports Starc's Decision

Although Starc has chosen not to comment on his withdrawal, Cricket Australia has extended its full support. The board has not disclosed whether his decision was purely injury-related or if there were other factors involved.

“We understand and respect Mitch’s decision," Australia’s senior men’s team chief selector George Bailey said on Wednesday. “Mitch is deeply respected for his commitment to international cricket and the priority he places on performing for Australia."

“His well-documented ability to play through pain and adversity, as well as forgoing opportunities in other parts of his career to put his country first, should be applauded. His loss is, of course, a blow for the Champions Trophy campaign but does provide an opportunity for someone else to make a mark on the tournament," he added.

Australia Names Replacements

With their frontline pacers unavailable, Australia has made three additions to their 15-member squad:

Spencer Johnson

Sean Abbott

Ben Dwarshuis

Johnson, who has played Australia in two ODIs and eight T20Is, is seen as the closest replacement for Starc with his left-arm pace. Steve Smith was named captain of the Champions Trophy campaign.

Australia’s squad for Champions Trophy 2025:

Steve Smith (C), Josh Inglis (WK), Sean Abbott, Alex Carey, Ben Dwarshuis, Nathan Ellis, Jake Fraser-McGurk, Aaron Hardie, Travis Head, Spencer Johnson, Marnus Labuschagne, Glenn Maxwell, Tanveer Sangha, Matthew Short, Adam Zampa.
