Sri Lanka Batter Niroshan Dickwella's Doping Ban Officially Lifted

Sri Lanka Batter Niroshan Dickwella's Doping Ban Officially Lifted

Sri Lanka’s wicketkeeper-batter Niroshan Dickwella, who was suspended for three years in August 2024 due to alleged anti-doping violations, has been cleared to return to cricket across all formats. The 31-year-old had been sanctioned by the Sri Lanka Anti-Doping Agency for returning a random test containing a prohibited substance.

Dickwella has lodged an appeal on this decision stating that the substance is not performance-enhancing and was not within the competition period, and his suspension stands by. His appeal goes through which makes it effective immediately, and he has no restrictions on playing cricket anymore.

This marks a massive turning point for Niroshan Dickwella, the last he played for Sri Lanka was against New Zealand, in March 2023 during the Christchurch Test. He had been struggling with poor form but still made only seven runs in that match and found himself benched after that first Test.

In March 2024, Dickwella was reinstated to the T20I squad for the series against Bangladesh but did not get to play in any of the matches. With the suspension over his head, Dickwella now gets a second chance to revive his international career and start afresh.

Niroshan Dickwella: A Talented Cricketer Struggling with Discipline

Niroshan Dickwella's career has been a mixed bag of great achievements and repeated controversies. The key contributor in all formats, he has scored 2,757 runs in Tests, 1,604 runs in ODIs, and 480 runs in T20Is. His talent is, however, often masked by disciplinary issues. Most notably in 2021, he was suspended along with Kusal Mendis and Danushka Gunathilake for violating bio-bubble protocols.

In 2024, Dickwella captained the Galle Marvels in the Lanka Premier League but was again in the middle of another controversy when he failed a doping test conducted under World Anti-Doping guidelines. He was indefinitely suspended by Sri Lanka Cricket in August 2024 and was suspended from all cricket activities pending further investigation.

Now cleared to return, Dickwella has the opportunity to rebuild his career and once again prove himself as a dependable wicket-keeper batsman for Sri Lanka. For this, he needs to unleash his obvious talent with a sharp mind that stays focused, consistent, and disciplined.
