Shubman Gill’s Asia Cup 2025 Spot in Doubt Despite Test Heroics

Even after a strong debut as India’s Test captain and a record-breaking tour of England, Shubman Gill, who many see as India’s future star in all formats, might still miss the T20I team for the Asia Cup. A new report says his spot could be affected because Sanju Samson has become an important opener in T20 cricket.
Shubman Gill May Miss T20I Team for Asia Cup 2025
According to a report by RevSportz, insiders said that Sanju Samson has been outstanding in T20Is, scoring three centuries in his last 10 matches for India. Because of this, “it wouldn’t be fair to push him down the batting order to make room for Gill.”
The report also pointed out that the current strong line-up includes Abhishek Sharma, the world’s top-ranked T20 batter, and Tilak Varma, who is ranked second.
Moreover, under head coach Gautam Gambhir and captain Suryakumar Yadav, the team has sought continuity something even Gill acknowledged during a press conference in England. The Asia Cup will serve as a dress rehearsal for next year’s home T20 World Cup, making it unlikely for India to disrupt that continuity after months of preparation and risk creating uncertainty in the dressing room.
Will Shubman Gill Make the T20I Squad After a Stellar IPL 2025?
Even with the uncertainty around him, Shubman Gill has done really well for India in T20Is. In 21 matches, he has scored 578 runs at a strike rate of 139.27, including three fifties and a century. His strong performances were one of the reasons he was made Suryakumar Yadav’s deputy in T20Is last July, as India started a new chapter under coach Gautam Gambhir.
Gill decided to focus more on the longer formats ahead of the Australia tour and the Champions Trophy, so he hasn’t played any T20Is since the Sri Lanka tour in July 2024. After that, Axar Patel was chosen as the T20I vice-captain.
Not to forget, Gill also had a phenomenal IPL 2025 season, clobbering 650 runs in 15 matches at a strike rate of 155.88, including six fifties. India are likely to announce the squad next week.
