Shubman Gill Injury Update: Likely to Return in January 2026 After Serious Neck Injury

India captain Shubman Gill suffered a serious neck injury during the first Test against South Africa in Kolkata. He had to leave the field immediately and was admitted to Woodlands Hospital for observation. Because of this injury, Gill missed the rest of the match and was ruled out of the second Test, which started on November 22 in Guwahati.
In his place, wicketkeeper-batter Rishabh Pant took over as captain. Fans are now anxiously waiting for news about when the young skipper will be back.
According to a PTI report, Gill’s injury is more serious than just a neck spasm. He will need a lot of rest, and the team doesn’t want to take any risk by bringing him back too soon.
Shubman Gill’s Injury Is More Than Just a Neck Spasm, Report Says
"Gill has been given an injection to alleviate his symptoms and will need a period of rest before starting rehab, training and skill work. There is every chance he could also be doubtful for the T20I series,” the BCCI source said.
Considering all this, the selectors are looking at January 2026 as a possible time for Gill to make his comeback. India’s white-ball series against South Africa will wrap up on December 19. After that, India will play New Zealand in three ODIs and five T20Is, starting January 11.
If the reports are correct, Gill is expected to return during the series against New Zealand. Meanwhile, the BCCI also announced India's squad for the upcoming three-match ODI series against South Africa. KL Rahul was appointed as the captain as Gill missed out.
Apart from him, Rishabh Pant has returned to the ODI squad and has been named vice-captain. Ruturaj Gaikwad also earned a spot after a couple of strong performances for India A against South Africa A in the recent unofficial ODI series in Rajkot. In those three matches, the 28-year-old scored 117, 68 not out, and 25. He has been included in the team because both Gill and the original vice-captain, Shreyas Iyer, are still recovering from their injuries.
India's ODI squad: Rohit Sharma, Yashasvi Jaiswal, Virat Kohli, Tilak Varma, KL Rahul (C) (wk), Rishabh Pant (wk), Washington Sundar, Ravindra Jadeja, Kuldeep Yadav, Nitish Kumar Reddy, Harshit Rana, Ruturaj Gaikwad, Prasidh Krishna, Arshdeep Singh, and Dhruv Jurel.
