This acquisition sets Iyer on a potential path to captaincy for the franchise, as indicated by Ricky Ponting, the head coach of PBKS.

After a dynamic start at the auction held in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia, PBKS demonstrated their intent by leveraging the largest available purse among the ten teams. This financial advantage was achieved by retaining only two uncapped players from their previous squad: Shashank Singh and Prabhsimran Singh. With strategic precision, PBKS made notable investments in players such as Arshdeep Singh and Yuzvendra Chahal, each for INR 18 crore, in addition to securing the talents of Marcus Stoinis and Glenn Maxwell.

Ponting, speaking to Star Sports, expressed his enthusiasm for Iyer’s leadership potential, stating, "I've worked with Shreyas before and he is a great guy and a great player. He'll be a great leader for our team if we decide to go that way, which I'm pretty sure we probably will."
