Shreyas Iyer, Jitesh Sharma Likely to Return as Gill & Jaiswal Miss Out on Asia Cup 2025 Squad

Shreyas Iyer, the star batter of the Indian cricket team and captain of Punjab Kings (PBKS), is expected to make a return to the squad for the Asia Cup 2025. On the other side, young Indian batting stars Shubman Gill and Yashasvi Jaiswal are likely to miss out on a place in the T20I squad, as per a recent report from Sportstar.
PBKS skipper Shreyas Iyer seems to have won back the trust of the selectors with his exceptional performance in the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2025. Shreyas Iyer showed attacking cricket while leading Punjab Kings in IPL 2025 and took the team all the way to the final. He set the example as captain, scoring runs regularly for his side. Iyer played with full confidence and ended the season with 604 runs at a strong average of 50.33 and an impressive strike rate of 175.07.
Shreyas Iyer, Jitesh Sharma set for India return
Even though he guided Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) to the IPL 2024 title, the selectors did not pick him. But now, things look different, as Iyer is likely to get a place in India’s squad for the Asia Cup 2025.
Alongside Shreyas Iyer, the Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) wicketkeeper-batsman Jitesh Sharma is all set to receive his India recall.
The 31-year-old Jitesh Sharma was mighty impressive for the Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) in IPL 2025 as he played some explosive knocks while batting down the order.
He last featured in a T20I match for India against Afghanistan at Holkar Stadium in Indore on January 14, 2024. Jitesh Sharma will serve as the backup wicketkeeper-batsman for India in the Asia Cup 2025, with Sanju Samson being the first-choice.
Tough call on either Rinku or Dube
Shreyas Iyer’s return might see either Rinku Singh or Shivam Dube miss out, as both were part of India’s last T20I series.
"Sportstar understands the selectors and team management are aligned on including an experienced middle-order batter suited to the slower, lower conditions expected in the UAE. If Shreyas is picked, it could mean a tough call on either Shivam Dube or Rinku Singh, both of whom were part of India’s last T20I assignment, against England in January," the report read.
Gill and Jaiswal likely to miss out on Asia Cup 2025 squad
India’s Test captain Shubman Gill and young opener Yashasvi Jaiswal are unlikely to find a place in the squad for the Asia Cup 2025 when the BCCI selectors meet on Tuesday.
Both Gill and Jaiswal have done well in international cricket as well as the IPL, but the Gautam Gambhir-led team management is keen to continue with the same core group that has been giving results since he took charge.
Another reason is the busy schedule. The Asia Cup ends on September 28, and only four days later, India will play a home Test series against West Indies from October 2. So, the selectors want Gill and Jaiswal to stay fresh for the Tests.
