Sam Curran Returns to England T20 Squads Against South Africa and Ireland
England have brought back Sam Curran for their upcoming T20 matches against South Africa and Ireland. Meanwhile, Ben Duckett will get an extra week off after struggling with his form recently. Curran hasn’t played for England this year under Brendon McCullum, but he has been in great form in domestic cricket. This summer, in 24 games across the T20 Blast and The Hundred, he scored 603 runs at a strike rate of 154.21 and took 33 wickets at low cost. He has now been included in the squads for all six of England’s next T20 matches.
Curran’s call-up comes just a day after South Africa showed that England rely too much on part-time spinners Jacob Bethell and Will Jacks in Thursday’s second ODI at Lord’s. Between them, Bethell and Jacks gave away 112 runs for just one wicket in 10 overs. Adding Curran to the squad gives England more options and balance in the team.
Ben Duckett will get an extra week off before England’s tours to New Zealand and Australia. He has played in all formats over the past year but looked out of form in Thursday’s innings scoring just 14 runs from 33 balls. After a good summer against India, where he scored 462 runs in nine innings, Duckett has struggled recently, passing 20 only once in his last 10 innings in the Hundred and ODIs. With him resting, Jamie Smith and Phil Salt will probably open the batting against South Africa, and Jacks or Tom Banton might replace Smith in Ireland.
Matthew Potts Withdraws from Ireland T20Is to Focus on County Cricket
In one last change, England have pulled Matthew Potts out of the Ireland T20Is so he can focus on playing for Durham in the County Championship and make a case for Ashes selection. There is a spot open in the Ashes squad after Jamie Overton quit red-ball cricket, and Potts could be a strong option. He had fallen down the order and wasn’t included in England’s squads against India, but with Overton stepping away and Sonny Baker struggling on his ODI debut, playing regular cricket for Durham could give Potts a better chance to get back in the team.
Jordan Cox, who plays with Curran for the Oval Invincibles, was added to the Ireland squad earlier this week but won’t be part of the South Africa series. Ben Duckett will stay with the ODI squad for Sunday’s dead-rubber match in Southampton.
