Sahibzada, Samson in ICC T20 World Cup Team of the Tournament

Sahibzada, Samson in ICC T20 World Cup Team of the Tournament

The International Cricket Council (ICC) has announced its team of the tournament for the 2026 T20 World Cup, a day after India lifted the trophy in Ahmedabad. The team was formed with suggestions from a selection panel including former West Indies player Ian Bishop, ex-England captain Eoin Morgan, Natalie Germanos, ICC representative Gaurav Saxena and Sri Lankan sports journalist Rex Clementine.

Sahibzada, Samson, Kishan form the top order

For the opening spots, Pakistan’s Sahibzada Farhan and India’s Sanju Samson were chosen. Sahibzada was one of Pakistan’s few, if not the only, bright spots in what was otherwise a dismal campaign. Ending the tournament as the highest run-scorer, the opening batter made the most runs by any batter as well as became the first player to hit two centuries in one T20 World Cup edition.

Samson, on the other hand, amassed impactful runs for his team. Batting in only five innings, he accumulated 321 runs, which include an 89-run score on two occasions, the semi-final and the final.

Besides him, Ishan Kishan, Hardik Pandya, and Jasprit Bumrah are the other Indians in the team. Ishan had a breakout season as well after being a surprise inclusion in India’s World Cup squad. He scored 317 runs at a strike rate of 193, staying in line with the team’s explosive top order.

His most notable performance during the tournament came against Pakistan, where he notched up a quick 77 off 40 deliveries to steady India.

Pandya, captain Markram get a spot

Pandya was a force to reckon with both the ball and the bat. He scored 217 runs and took 9 wickets in nine games.

Bumrah, meanwhile, finished the tournament as the highest wicket-taker with 14 wickets across the World Cup. His tally includes a 4/15 that he took in the final to run riot against New Zealand.

South Africa’s Aiden Markram and Lungi Ngidi also feature on the list. Ngidi took 12 wickets across seven games, joining the third-highest in the tournament. Out of his tally, eleven wickets came at Ahmedabad, which was among the T20 World Cup’s highest-scoring venues.

His teammate Markram, who will also captain the team of the tournament, scored 286 runs in the World Cup, the most by any captain.

Bowling attack

England’s spin all-rounder Will Jacks and spinner Adil Rashid have been slotted in for the team’s lower order. Jacks had an incredible season with both ball and bat. He took nine wickets and scored 226 runs.

Against New Zealand in the crucial Super Eights game, Jacks scored an 18-ball unbeaten 32 runs and also took a couple of scalps, including Tim Seifert’s prized wicket.

The fast bowling unit includes, besides Ngidi and Bumrah, Jason Holder and Blessing Muzarabani.
