SA20 Playoffs Explained: Complete Guide to the Knockout Stage
As the T20 leagues are taking over the international cricketing calendar once again, South Africa is also experiencing the arrival of its elite T20 league in the form of the South Africa T20 (SA20). Ever since the blockbuster inaugural season in 2023, the SA20 has received immense recognition and is among the best T20 franchise leagues in the world. The ongoing season of SA20 is in its fourth season, and the playoffs of the SA20 2025-26 season are going to be hosted from January 21, with the final taking place on January 25.
While the battle for the playoffs is on, it’s time to introduce the format of the playoffs. Like in the majorly popular Indian T20 league IPL and other T20 leagues like it, the SA20 has introduced one important change to the format, which includes the Qualifier 1, Eliminator, and the Qualifier 2 before the final.

After the addition of the amendment in Season 2 of the league, like in every other competition, in this case as well, the six teams compete up until the last match of the league in order to enter the top four in the points table, who qualify in the last week of the tournament. In Qualifier 1, the top two teams qualify. The winner moves to the finale directly, whereas the other gets another chance in Qualifier 2.
However, that is not the case in the Eliminator. In fact, the Eliminator to be held on January 22 is basically a shootout between the third and fourth-placed teams. Although the winners move on to play the loser of the Qualifier 1 match, the Eliminator itself gets eliminated. Later on, the two teams clash to take the final place in the Qualifier 2. Although the losers bid farewell to the competition, the winners move on to the finals.
