Rohit Sharma and Gambhir Clash Over India’s Spinner Choice for ICC Champions Trophy
Rohit Sharma and India’s head coach, Gautam Gambhir, have had differing views on a lot of things. There’s a lot of pressure on Team India to bounce back and claim another major trophy after a tough Test season last year, and the ICC Champions Trophy is the perfect stage for that. However, success depends on having a team that’s on top of its game. While India’s squad is undoubtedly one of the strongest, the key lies in selecting the right 11 players for each match.
It looks like the selection of ten players is already settled, with only one spot left for discussion – the specialist spinner. India has five spin options to choose from, including Kuldeep Yadav and Varun Chakravarthy. Since Axar Patel and Ravindra Jadeja are both all-rounders, the final spot for a spinner will come down to either Kuldeep or Chakravarthy. What’s interesting, though, is that Rohit Sharma and Gautam Gambhir don’t see eye to eye on this decision.
As per CricBlogger, the selection battle continues between Kuldeep Yadav and Varun Chakravarthy for the match against Bangladesh. Rohit Sharma has a preference for Kuldeep and Gautam Gambhir has faith in Chakravarthy. The decision is mainly based on form and Chakravarthy has been outstanding since returning to international cricket, picking up 31 wickets – the most by any bowler in this period – with an astonishing average of 11.25 and a strike rate of 8.9.
"While sources insisted that both captain Rohit Sharma and coach Gautam Gambhir, as usual, are divided over the choice — Varun could just get the nod ahead of Kuldeep because of Gambhir’s backing. Rohit is also tempted to continue with Kuldeep because of his sheet record in the past few matches. Rohit’s choices have been crushed by Gambhir in the last few months because of the former’s poor form and another round of drama could happen about Varun and Kuldeep." the report stated.
