R Ashwin Withdraws from ILT20 After No Teams Show Interest, Confirms Full BBL Season
The past few days have been quite up and down for former India spinner R Ashwin. He was part of the ILT20 auction recently, but since no team showed interest, he decided to withdraw as his expectations were not met. Now, as per a Cricbuzz report, Ashwin is set to play the full BBL season for the Sydney Thunders in Australia.
During the auction, things didn’t go well for R Ashwin. He went unsold in the first round and later pulled his name out of the remaining rounds. He had set his base price at $120,000, the highest among all registered players, but no team came forward to pick him.
"That's the price I wanted as a bare minimum, and I'm happy not to play at this stage of my career if my value isn't met," Ashwin told Cribuzz.
Meanwhile, the experienced spinner has already joined Sydney Thunder for the upcoming Big Bash League (BBL) season 15. The 39-year-old shared that he had thought about pulling out of the ILT20 auction because of his BBL deal, but he still went ahead to respect his commitment to the UAE-based T20 league.
“I was about to pull out a few days before the auction because of the Thunder deal, but since I had already committed to the ILT20 that I would enter the auction, I honoured my word. However, I did not agree to lowering my base price. I have signed up with Sydney Thunder for the entire season,” he said
Ashwin will be the first Indian men’s team player to play in the BBL, as he has confirmed a full season with Sydney Thunder. He has a great IPL record, playing 221 matches for five teams, winning two titles with Chennai Super Kings in 2010 and 2011. He took 187 IPL wickets, the fifth most in the league, and 317 wickets in 333 T20 games overall. In the IPL 2025 mega auction, he was bought for INR 9.75 crore, proving his big value.
