Olympics 2028 Cricket: Pakistan Faces Ouster Amid New ICC Qualification Rules

2028 Olympics Cricket: Pakistan Faces Ouster Amid New ICC Qualification Rules

[ Poll: 0dw9jxyO ]

The qualification process for cricket at the 2028 Olympics has been confirmed by the International Cricket Council (ICC). According to a report by The Guardian, a British news outlet, Pakistan's men's team is unlikely to qualify.

The decision was made during the ICC's annual meeting in Singapore, where they agreed to use a regional qualification system to select the teams that will take part in the event. Six teams will take part in the men’s cricket tournament at the Los Angeles Games, with the United States automatically getting a spot as the host nation.

To make sure every continent is represented, the highest-ranked team from each region will qualify. But there’s a twist when it comes to the USA’s place in the event. The ICC recently asked the USA Cricket Board to step down due to leadership issues. If those problems aren’t sorted out soon, a Caribbean team might take the USA’s spot.

Only One Spot Left as Top Teams Qualify: Pakistan May Miss 2028 Olympics

India is expected to qualify from Asia. Similarly, Australia from Oceania, South Africa from Africa, and Great Britain from Europe are likely to secure direct spots. On the other hand, Pakistan, Sri Lanka, and New Zealand won’t get automatic qualification under this system. Although the board has not yet confirmed the ICC's ruling, it is unlikely to be overturned, despite the disapproval of Pakistan and New Zealand.

To help make cricket more global and ensure teams from all around the world get a fair shot, the International Olympic Committee (IOC) backed a regional qualifying system. But with the USA, Australia, South Africa, India, and Great Britain already locking in their places, there’s now just one spot left up for grabs.

Cricket Returns to the Olympics After 128 Years

The distribution of the sixth and final spot will be determined by the ICC. Rumor has it that it might go to a Caribbean Islands representative team, much as the setup at the 2022 Commonwealth Games in Birmingham, where Barbados represented the region.

Cricket at the LA 2028 Olympics will be played in the T20 format for both women and men. The matches will run from July 12 to July 29, 2028. The women’s final is set for July 20, while the men’s final will be held on July 29. The ICC has already confirmed these dates. Cricket is coming back to the Olympics after 128 years. The last time it was played was in the 1900 Paris Games, where Great Britain won a one-off match against France and took home the gold.
