Mayank Yadav Likely to Undergo Treatment in NZ; BCCI Opts for Bumrah-Style Recovery Plan: Reports
Lucknow Super Giants pacer Mayank Yadav is set to fly to New Zealand to get his back checked by specialists. He’s had a tough time with injuries and had just made a comeback in April during IPL 2025, but could only manage two games before getting sidelined again. Now, he’s taking a similar route to Jasprit Bumrah, who also went to New Zealand for treatment back in 2022 when he was dealing with a back injury.
As per a report by Revsportz, Mayank Yadav is expected to travel to New Zealand in the coming days to consult specialists about his back injury. He played just two matches in IPL 2025, picking up 2 wickets at an average of 50, before being ruled out for the rest of the season. Mayank was retained by LSG for a hefty ₹11 crore, and with another injury setback, it’s uncertain whether the team will stick with him for next season.
Mayank was first picked by LSG in the 2022 IPL auction. However, injuries kept him out of that season. Unfortunately, the injury troubles continued and he missed the next edition too. He finally made his much-awaited debut for LSG in IPL 2024 and instantly caught everyone’s attention with his raw pace and ability to bowl fast consistently.
In his very first IPL match, Mayank Yadav had to leave the field midway due to an abdominal injury. He came back for the next game but once again walked off after bowling just 3.1 overs. A side strain then ruled him out for the rest of the season. After spending several months recovering at the NCA in Bengaluru, he made his T20I debut in the India vs Bangladesh series and picked up two wickets. However, his return was short-lived, he suffered a back injury that ruled him out of the India vs South Africa T20Is and kept him sidelined for over three months.
Mayank Yadav to Follow Bumrah’s Path for Injury Treatment in New Zealand
Now, as per Revsportz, Mayank is set to travel to New Zealand to consult a specialist. Interestingly, this is the same route Jasprit Bumrah took when he had back issues. Bumrah, who also dealt with a stress fracture in 2023, had visited New Zealand for treatment and was seen by the same doctor again during the Border-Gavaskar Trophy earlier this year.
One key reason the BCCI wants Mayank to consult overseas experts is to prevent more injury setbacks and help him get his pace back. Lately, he hasn’t looked like his old self and has struggled to even hit 140 kmph.
This latest update suggests that Mayank could be out for quite a while, possibly missing key series, something that could hurt his chances of securing a regular spot in India’s T20I team. He made his debut for India in 2024 against Bangladesh and picked up four wickets in that series.
