Lockie Ferguson suffers hamstring injury, doubtful for Champions Trophy 2025

Lockie Ferguson suffers hamstring injury, doubtful for Champions Trophy 2025New Zealand pacer Lockie Ferguson’s Playing in the upcoming Champions Trophy is in doubt because he injured his hamstring during the ILT20. The 33-year-old was captaining the Desert Vipers in their Qualifier 1 match against the Dubai Capitals when he got injured in the fourth over. Ferguson has not bowled four overs due to injury,

Ferguson had scans of the hamstring injury, but the results are still pending. New Zealand’s head coach, Gary Stead, revealed that they are waiting on a report from their radiologist. He said it seemed like a small hamstring strain, but they’re still waiting to know how long the recovery will take. Based on the update, they'll tell if Ferguson will be part of the New Zealand team for the upcoming tri-series against Pakistan and South Africa, as well as the Champions Trophy starting on February 19.

“We’ve got the images from Lockie’s scan, and we’re just waiting for the radiologist’s report to confirm the extent of the injury,” Stead said. “Once we know more, we’ll make a decision on whether Lockie travels to Pakistan or if we need to replace him for the Champions Trophy.”

Vipers’ Focus on Workload Management

The Desert Vipers took care to manage their pace bowlers' physical and mental fatigue.

“We’ve been careful about workload management, especially with our quick bowlers,” Moody explained in the Vipers Voices podcast. “Lockie, Mohammad Amir, and Luke Wood all had chances to rest and freshen up during the tournament. It's been a demanding schedule, and while physical fatigue is a factor, mental fatigue is just as important to manage in modern-day cricket.”

The New Zealand management is seeing closely injury updates ahead of the Champions Trophy and tri-series.
