IPL 2026 Update: 3 Teams That Might Change Their Captain

The Indian Premier League (IPL) is one of the most popular T20 tournaments in the world, and the competition is always tough. Teams often make bold decisions to chase success, and one of the biggest calls they take is changing the captain. A captain plays a major role in shaping the team’s journey, whether it ends in victory or disappointment.
The 2026 season of the IPL is likely to be no different. Some franchises may look for fresh leadership, while others could even surprise fans with new captaincy choices. Here’s a look at the teams that might enter IPL 2026 with a different captain.
Chennai Super Kings (CSK)
While MS Dhoni has been the face of CSK right from the first season, the baton was passed on to Ruturaj Gaikwad in IPL 2025. However, an injury to Gaikwad meant that Dhoni was back in charge of the side. While Gaikwad is still the official captain, he won just one of the five matches in charge. Dhoni, as a result, might once again get a chance to lead the franchise, unless Samson comes in via a trade deal, as heavily rumoured.
Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR)
KKR made a surprising move before the 2025 auction by not keeping their title-winning captain Shreyas Iyer. Instead, they spent a massive 23.75 crore on Venkatesh Iyer. But the bigger twist came when they handed the captaincy to Ajinkya Rahane. The gamble didn’t work, as KKR had a poor season and ended up in eighth place.
With that, Rahane may lose the captaincy, but the big question is, who takes over next? Apart from Venkatesh, the team also has options like Manish Pandey, Quinton de Kock, Sunil Narine, and Andre Russell.
Rajasthan Royals (RR)
With Sanju Samson all but set to leave RR, it opens the doors for the franchise to ring in a new era under a new leader. Samson has been with RR since 2018, but is reportedly open to a trade deal.
We saw Riyan Parag lead the franchise when Samson was injured in IPL 2025, and he could very well be named their permanent captain in 2026. If not Parag, Yashasvi Jaiswal too seems to be a feasible long-term option.
