IPL 2026 Auction: Did CSK’s Release of Pathirana and Cameron Green Push Andre Russell Into Retirement?
Andre Russell and the Knight Riders share a very close bond. Apart from playing for the Kolkata Knight Riders, the Jamaican all-rounder has also worn the same purple-and-gold colours in other leagues for Abu Dhabi Knight Riders in the ILT20, Trinbago Knight Riders in the CPL, and LA Knight Riders in MLC.
Why KKR Released Andre Russell Before the IPL 2026 Auction
That’s why everyone was surprised when KKR let him go before the IPL 2026 auction. Since his debut, Russell had never played for any other IPL team. Many believed he would finish as a one-team player, just like Virat Kohli and MS Dhoni. In a way, that still happened, because Russell announced his retirement from the IPL yesterday. But the story doesn’t end there. There’s more behind this big move.
According to Cricbuzz, Russell could have entered the auction, but KKR’s decision to offer him the role of power coach made him think differently. KKR were ready to release him anyway if not for IPL rules and also because CSK released Matheesha Pathirana and Cameron Green.
KKR didn’t expect CSK to let go of the Sri Lankan fast bowler. Once CSK made that move, they suddenly had a huge purse of INR 43.40 crore for the IPL 2026 auction. If KKR had kept Russell, their own purse would have been only INR 46.30 crore instead of 64.30 crore.
With a smaller purse, KKR would not have had much strength at the auction. They want to go after big names like Green, Pathirana, Ravi Bishnoi, and Jamie Smith. They might even try to buy back Venkatesh Iyer for a lower price. For all this, they needed a large budget and releasing Russell gave them that room.
KKR had marked Russell as their top retention last season. But instead of paying him INR 18 crore, they were actually paying him INR 12 crore. If KKR had kept Russell again before this auction, the highest amount 18 crore would have been cut from their purse, not 12.
Because of this IPL retention rule, KKR had no choice but to release him. If they had been able to save that extra 6 crore, they might have kept Russell for at least one more season.
