India’s 5 Biggest Wins by Runs in Asia Cup History

India’s 5 Biggest Wins by Runs in Asia Cup HistoryIndia’s dominance in the Asia Cup isn’t just about their record eight titles. Over the last 40 years, the Men in Blue have stamped their authority with some massive wins by runs, proving why they’re the strongest team in the tournament’s history. Right from the first Asia Cup in 1984 to their latest win in 2023, India has shown again and again how strong their batting and bowling can be.

1. India vs Hong Kong – 256 Runs

India’s biggest win in the Asia Cup came on June 25, 2008 in Karachi, when they beat Hong Kong by 256 runs their largest margin in the tournament.

MS Dhoni scored an unbeaten 109, while Suresh Raina hit his first ODI hundred with 101 runs. Openers Gautam Gambhir (51) and Virender Sehwag (78 from 44 balls) gave India a flying start with a 127-run stand in just 15 overs. With these big knocks, India posted 374/4, the highest Asia Cup total at that time. In reply, Hong Kong were bowled out for just 118. Piyush Chawla was the star with the ball taking 4 wickets for 23 runs, as India won easily in a completely one-sided game.

2. India vs Pakistan – 228 Runs

India’s second-biggest win in the Asia Cup came against Pakistan at the R. Premadasa Stadium in Colombo on September 10, 2023, when they crushed their rivals by 228 runs. It was a game that highlighted India’s dominance on the big stage and produced one of the most memorable performances in Asia Cup history.

Virat Kohli was at his brilliant best, scoring 122 not out from 94 balls, while KL Rahul marked his return with a classy 111 not out from 106 balls. Together, they added 233 runs for the third wicket the highest-ever partnership in Asia Cup ODIs. Their calm yet aggressive approach turned a shaky 66/2 into a commanding total of 356/2.

Pakistan’s chase never got going. Kuldeep Yadav spun a web around their batting, taking a sensational 5/25. With wickets falling at regular intervals, Pakistan were bowled out for just 128 in 32 overs, handing India a massive 228-run win their biggest ever against Pakistan in ODIs.

3. India vs UAE – 116 Runs

In the 2004 Asia Cup at Dambulla, India registered a comfortable win over the United Arab Emirates. Batting first, the Men in Blue put up 260/6 in 50 overs, thanks to Rahul Dravid’s brilliant knock of 104 from 93 balls. Sourav Ganguly also played well for his 56 and together they gave India a strong platform to control the game.

Chasing the target, UAE never looked settled against India’s bowling. Sachin Tendulkar picked up 3/21, while Irfan Pathan grabbed 3/28 to break through the batting order. Apart from Mohammad Tauqir’s fighting 55, no one else could make an impact and UAE were bowled out for just 144 in 35 overs. India’s 116-run win was a clear show of their batting strength and bowling power.

4. India vs Sri Lanka – 81 Runs

India won their fifth Asia Cup title in 2010. They beat Sri Lanka by 81 runs in the final at Dambulla. India batted first and scored 268 for 6 in 50 overs. Dinesh Karthik held the innings together with 66 runs. Rohit Sharma made 41 runs and Suresh Raina added 29. Their runs helped keep the score moving. India kept going even as they lost wickets along the way.

Sri Lanka’s chase did not get going, as early wickets put them under pressure right from the start. Ashish Nehra was good with the ball and took 4/40. Ravindra Jadeja added 2/29 and kept things tight. Chamara Kapugedera fought hard and scored 55 runs, but the rest of the team did not give him much support. Sri Lanka were all out for 187 in 44.4 overs. The win was even more special for India because they got it in Sri Lanka’s home ground. MS Dhoni led the team with smart captaincy and helped them win another Asia Cup title.

5. India vs Pakistan – 54 Runs

India’s rivalry with Pakistan lit up the very first Asia Cup in 1984, where the Men in Blue claimed a 54-run win at Sharjah to lift the maiden trophy. Batting first in the decisive group clash, India posted 188/4 in 46 overs. Surinder Khanna led the way with a steady 56, while Ghulam Parkar offered good support. The score might look small today, but on that surface, it was more than competitive.

Pakistan’s chase did not work. Roger Binny changed the game with a great performance, taking three wickets for 33 runs. He broke through the batting line-up. The team had some experienced players, but Pakistan scored only 134 runs before they were all out in 39.4 overs. This win gave India their first Asia Cup title. It also started their long run of being strong in the tournament.
