Indian Players and Batters Lead Retention Choices with Captaincy Shake-Up

Indian Players and Batters Lead Retention Choices with Captaincy Shake-Up

Teams are prioritizing local talent, with Indian players making up 78.26% of the retained roster. Only Sunrisers Hyderabad and Kolkata Knight Riders have kept more than one overseas player, with Hyderabad holding onto three and Kolkata retaining two. Notably, Mumbai Indians, Royal Challengers Bengaluru, and Punjab Kings have exclusively retained Indian players.

The emphasis remains on batting talent, with 28 batters retained compared to 11 bowlers and 7 allrounders. Rajasthan Royals, for instance, have only retained one bowler, Sandeep Sharma, among their six players. Similarly, Sunrisers Hyderabad have Pat Cummins as their sole frontline bowler. Conversely, Mumbai Indians and Chennai Super Kings have maintained a more balanced squad, each retaining a death bowler (Jasprit Bumrah and Matheesha Pathirana) and an allrounder (Hardik Pandya and Ravindra Jadeja). Lucknow Super Giants have heavily invested in bowlers, keeping Mayank Yadav, Ravi Bishnoi, and Mohsin Khan, while KKR have retained bowlers Harshit Rana and Varun Chakravarthy, alongside allrounders Sunil Narine and Andre Russell.

Interestingly, eight teams have decided to retain uncapped Indian players, a significant increase from just four teams in 2022. Only Mumbai Indians and Sunrisers Hyderabad have opted out of this strategy.
